There has been a significant rise in the number of patents recently in the economy as a whole, not just the beer industry, and it appears to bring increasingly substantial drawbacks. As the number of patents rises, so does the amount of patent litigation which can be very detrimental to the firms aggressively engaging in R&D. This article argues that the companies who do the most research are sued the most, decreasing incentives and innovation. This problem is becoming increasingly apparent in the technology industry.
